Microchannel heat exchangers have a similar design to a finned tube coil but with the added benefit of having many small holes in the flat tubes which dramatically increases their surface area, thereby allowing more thermal energy to be transferred via convection. This type of heat exchanger is usually used in commercial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, although it can also be found in residential AC, air dryers, cabinet cooling and rooftop units.

The last type of heat exchanger is a plate and frame heat exchanger which uses plates to transfer thermal energy from one fluid to another. They can be found in large HVAC systems such as commercial chillers, condensers, air handlers and ductwork units. They are also commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems such as PTACs (Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners). Plate and frame heat exchangers are generally coated with an anti-corrosion substance to prevent corrosion.

Energy Recovery Ventilators

Heat exchangers are also used in industrial processes to recover wasted heat by transferring it from one stream to another. This can help save money and increase efficiency in factories or plants. They are generally not found in homes or small businesses because they can be expensive and require significant reworking of the existing condenser unit’s piping, additional refrigerant switching valves and wiring changes.

In addition to transferring heat, a heat exchanger in an air conditioner also moderates indoor humidity by removing the excess moisture from the air as it passes through the evaporator coils. This is why air conditioning is often thought of as a dehumidifier as well as an air conditioner. The removal of excess moisture and heat is important for comfort because dry air feels much cooler than humid air. It is important to regularly clean your heat exchanger to prevent dirt and mineral deposits from fouling it and hindering its performance. To do this, you’ll need to turn off your system and carefully remove the access panel then brush or vacuum away loose debris. For stubborn deposits, you can use a mild detergent solution and rinse thoroughly.
